On the occasion of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, ERIO and ternYpe commemorate all victims and survivors of the Holocaust. This day represents an opportunity to remember the atrocities carried out by the Nazi regime during World War II. Like Jews, homosexuals, persons with disabilities, Roma and Sinti were brutally persecuted by the Nazi regime that considered them as “racially inferior”.
The Holocaust marks an especially dark chapter in an ongoing history of Roma persecution, which persists until today. Despite the horrors and tragedies from the past, equality and human rights for Roma are still threatened by severe stigmatisation, marginalisation, and discrimination in many parts of Europe. Especially the rising of anti-Gypsyism, racist political discourses and right-wing extremist movements, stirring negative sentiments towards Roma, should be combatted.
